Brent House, the Episcopal Center at the University of Chicago, is seeking applicants for our graduate student residential program.
Brent House carries out an active ministry with undergraduates, graduate students, and other University community members, with the house itself being an integral part of that ministry, providing a safe, welcoming, and nourishing place for meetings, prayer and worship, studying, and community.
The life of a graduate student can be isolating. Brent House provides a balance of independence and community that supports our residents' academic and work commitments, while providing company and support on that journey. We have room for seven graduate student residents who live in comfortable rooms on the two upstairs floors. Each year they build a community based on shared meals and hospitality. Residents need not be Episcopalians or even Christian, but they do need to be comfortable living in and working with a ministry that is explicitly both.
The house is located at 5540 S Woodlawn Ave, just two blocks away from the UChicago campus. Rents for the coming academic year will range from $815-875 per month, including heat, electricity, internet, and laundry facilities. Rooms each have a sink and residents share bathrooms on each floor.
In addition to being a great place to live, Brent House represents a special sort of community. If you are in Chicago, we’d be happy to give you an in-person tour and have you talk to a current resident. If you’re elsewhere we can arrange for a virtual tour.
If you are interested in applying, please fill out this form. We will be considering applications on a rolling, first-come basis. It is very important that one of your references include someone who has lived with you.
Expectations:
• Biweekly shared meals with other residents
• A commitment to building a sense of community among the residents
• Active support of the hospitality of Brent House and its ministries with undergraduates, graduate students, and other community members
• Participation in regular (usually weekly) house tasks and communal cleanup days (usually quarterly)
Benefits:
• A comfortable room in a historic house with a spacious, well-equipped, shared kitchen
• Well-appointed common living areas
• Free laundry and wi-fi
• A lively community of students
• Rich spiritual resources
• A chance to listen for God’s call in your life
