Engaging Religious Communities Abroad: One Year Post-Cairo

Tuesday, June 8, 2010

Dirk Ficca, Executive Director, Council for a Parliament of the World’s Religions

Eboo Patel, Executive Director, Interfaith Youth Core

Afeefa Syeed, Senior Culture and Development Advisor, Asia and Middle East Bureaus, U.S. Agency for International Development

Moderated by Rachel Bronson, Vice President for Programs and Studies, The Chicago Council on Global Affairs

June 4, 2010 marks the first anniversary of President Obama’s speech at Cairo University, during which he outlined a path toward “a new beginning” with Muslim communities around the world. During his speech the President recognized the importance of engaging not only with governments but with economically and politically influential sectors of societies, including Muslim communities. It follows that the next steps will include a strategy to engage religious communities of all faiths in addressing pressing foreign policy challenges, and to build the institutional capacity to support it. The Chicago Council is particularly interested in the Administration’s follow-up to the Cairo speech given our recent task force report, Engaging Religious Communities Abroad: A New Imperative for U.S. Foreign Policy, which outlines specific policy recommendations towards such a strategy. Join us for an important conversation that will serve as both a one-year anniversary review of President Obama’s speech in Cairo and the Chicago presentation of The Chicago Council’s task force report. For more information, go to the website.

Our own Rafael Suarez was featured and quoted in Anglican Advance’s article about the Diocesan Convention. You can check the issue out here.

“In his response, Rafael Suarez of Brent House campus ministry emphasized the need for face to face dialogue and interaction, in lieu of email and social media tools. People want to be challenged about their spirituality, he said, and one of the strengths of the Episcopal Church is engaging people in thoughtful conversation and debate. Suarez also urged the clergy and delegates to engage in direct ministry, and focus outreach closer to home. While he has been on mission trips to Appalachia and South America, and found those rewarding, he realizes that the cost involved can limit the effectiveness of outreach. ‘It’s really terrible when you see what other parts of the globe are facing, but have you seen the South Side?’ he asked. ‘I walk down the block and I see empty lots and boarded up buildings. I see kids who don’t know how to read. This is a crisis in our backyard.’”

Rafael Suarez:

“As someone who grew up in this age, I really hate gizmos and gadgets and technology. Got it coming out of my ears. So what I really think what we should do is connect face to face. Bring back sitting down to dinner with people.”

Holy Wisdom Monastery, an ecumenical community of women in Madison, Wisconsin, is offering two programs for women.
The first is a retreat for single women who want to explore life in our community of Protestant and Roman Catholic women. Our retreat called Exploring Community: Benedictine Life will be offered March 26-28.
Our second program is Volunteer in Community, offered June 14-July 3 and July 19-31. This is a unique opportunity for women to grow spiritually and care for the earth. In 2009, a diverse group of thirteen women from across the US and two from New Zealand participated in the program. A former volunteer says…

Learning how to tend the prairie or to garden or to landscape while learning so much about myself and developing my spirituality…all in a gorgeous setting with an incredible community – what a unique and privileged education this has been!

We are looking for an intentionally small group of students from a variety of religious backgrounds (or even no religious background) to participate.

Each of our discussions will focus on a specific topic related to the intersections of religion and sexuality. Participants will be invited to engage these topics from the vantage point of “What do these questions about sexuality mean in diverse religious and spiritual contexts?” Participants will be encouraged to express their own ideas and to engage with other’s answers. Specific topics will include Dating, Marriage, and Singlehood, Sex Education, Sexual Violence, and LGBTQ people.

Our discussion seeks to foster dialogue as opposed to giving answers or creating debate. We hope that participants will commit to attending all eight sessions, the first of which will be a general session to set the tone for future conversation.

Please consider to coming to our first session on Monday, February 1 at 4:30 with food provided. Feel free to invite anyone else you know who may be interested (or send us their contact information). And do not hesitate to contact Jimmy Hoke (jhoke@uchicago.edu) or Shannon Copp (sccopp@gmail.com) if you have any questions.
